YELF is a partner organization implementing the UN International Decade for People of African Descent.
There are two objectives to the UN International Decade for People of African Descent 2015-2024[1] initiative. The first are a series of workshops to further develop the local heritage sector as Suriname nears its 160-year anniversary of the emancipation of slavery in 2023. The second is an academic virtual conference to connect inter-disciplinary international experts to explore how heritage defines and contributes to the themes of the” Decade” recognition, justice, and development.
The workshop series is complementary to the development theme. It includes: a film exposé about traditional Maroon pottery making; a workshop to connect eco-tourism and to archaeology; a workshop in ceramic identification; a presentation and videography about community curated archaeological landscapes; and a youth history debate.
It is the intent that moving forward, there may be a more robust approach that better serves the heritage needs of African descent people. Additionally, we will use this opportunity to highlight the unique contributions Surinamese communities and heritage professionals are making to the field as they continue to conserve and promote local heritage.
